What exactly do I mean by the One Big Issue when it comes to Reentry?
In a nutshell, it's what probably caused the Big Trouble the reentry client experienced. Furthermore, it's likely to be THE challenge to overcome if there's to be reentry success.
- Learning to read
- Remaining clean and sober
- Staying on the meds and going to counselling
- Keeping away from the wrong people and places
Nothing profound or complicated here. Situations and conditions easy to see and understand. Basic stuff. Things any normal ten-year-old kid, properly briefed, could figure out in a minute.
And yet, all too often they are missed, ignored, or callously disregarded.
There's a long list of reasons: no coordination between programs, poorly trained/uncaring staff, under-resourced department, quota-centric metrics, on and on.
The first order of business for a reentry helper should be identifying the probable One Big Issue. As for clients, their task is to "own the fix" for the One Big Issue. I call it their Personal Job One. In other words, the Elephant in The Room needs to be recognized, named, and welcomed - not pushed aside.
Keep me posted.
